The Lamp under a Basket is the saying of Jesus about light that was lit to be seen.
No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed,
but puts it on a stand,
so that those who enter may see the light.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nothing is hidden except to be made manifest.
Take care then how you hear.
A lamp in a first-century house was a small flame in a small room. You did not light it to hide it. You set it where the room could use it.
- Jesus takes that obvious act and lays it on disciples.
- Matthew hears it in the Sermon: you are the light of the world; let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father.
- Mark and Luke hear it after the sower. The word is sown.
- A lamp is lit. Hiding it under a jar or a bed is not caution. It is waste. What is hidden will be disclosed. The ear that receives the secret is not a vault. It is a stand.
- Luke says it again when people demanded a sign: no one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, the whole body is full of light.
The saying therefore runs two ways. The gospel is not a private hobby. The disciple is not a covered flame. God lit what He meant to be seen. A basket can be fear, or respectability, or a religion that keeps the word indoors. The stand is public holiness that points past the lamp to the Father.

- Hidden things are heading toward disclosure. Secrets of the kingdom are not meant to die in the dark.

- Mark 4:21-25 – “And he said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’ And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.’”
- Luke 8:16-18 – “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care then how you hear…”
- Luke 11:33-36 – “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness… If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”
- John 8:12 – “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
- John 1:4-5, 9 – In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness. The true light was coming into the world.
- Ephesians 5:8-13 – You are light in the Lord; walk as children of light; take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. When anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible.
