The resurrection of Jesus Christ is
the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
The New Testament presents
strong evidence for this event,
including the empty tomb,
multiple eyewitness appearances,
the transformation of the disciples,
and the rapid growth of the early church
despite persecution.
The resurrection
is not merely a matter of faith
but is supported by
historical and biblical testimony.
The resurrection is one of the best-attested events in the New Testament:
- All four Gospels record the empty tomb and the appearances of the risen Jesus.
- Jesus appeared to individuals, small groups, and more than 500 people at one time (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).
- The resurrection is the central message preached by the apostles (Acts 2:24-32; 3:15; 4:33; 17:31).
- The early church was founded on the conviction that Jesus had risen from the dead.
The resurrection fulfills Old Testament prophecy and is presented as the vindication of Jesus’ claims.
The empty tomb is one of the strongest pieces of evidence:
- The tomb was known and guarded by Roman soldiers.
- The large stone was rolled away and the body was gone.
- The grave clothes were left neatly folded.
- The Jewish and Roman authorities could not produce the body to disprove the resurrection claim.
- Women (whose testimony was not highly valued in that culture) were the first witnesses — an unlikely detail if the story were fabricated.
Jesus appeared to many people after His resurrection:
- Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18)
- The other women (Matthew 28:9-10)
- Peter (Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5)
- The disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)
- The apostles (multiple times)
- More than 500 people at one time (1 Corinthians 15:6)
- James, the brother of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:7)
- Paul on the road to Damascus (Acts 9; 1 Corinthians 15:8)
These appearances were physical and tangible — Jesus ate, was touched, and spoke with people.
The change in the disciples provides powerful evidence:
- Before the resurrection, they were fearful and scattered.
- After the resurrection, they became bold witnesses willing to die for their faith.
- They proclaimed the resurrection in Jerusalem, where it could easily have been disproven.
This transformation is difficult to explain unless they truly saw the risen Christ.
The rapid growth of Christianity despite intense persecution is another strong proof:
- The message of the resurrection was the heart of early preaching.
- Thousands believed in Jerusalem shortly after the events (Acts 2:41; 4:4).
- The church spread throughout the Roman Empire in a relatively short time.
People do not willingly die for a known lie. The early Christians were convinced that Jesus had risen.
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (the earliest written account)
- Matthew 28
- Mark 16
- Luke 24
- John 20–21
- Acts 1:3; 2:32; 3:15; 4:33
The resurrection of Jesus is the best-attested miracle in history. The empty tomb, the eyewitness appearances, the transformed lives of the disciples, and the birth of the church all point to the reality that Jesus rose from the dead. This event is the foundation of Christian hope and the assurance that death has been defeated.
