The empty tomb is
one of the central evidences
of Jesus’ resurrection.
On the third day
after His crucifixion and burial,
the tomb where Jesus had been laid
was found empty.
This event is recorded in all four Gospels
and forms a foundational part of the gospel message.
All four Gospels record the discovery of the empty tomb:
- Mary Magdalene and other women went to the tomb early on the first day of the week to anoint Jesus’ body (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1; John 20:1).
- They found the large stone rolled away from the entrance.
- The tomb was empty. The grave clothes were left behind, neatly folded (John 20:6-7).
- Angels announced to the women that Jesus had risen (Matthew 28:5-7; Mark 16:5-7; Luke 24:4-7).
- Peter and John ran to the tomb and confirmed it was empty (John 20:3-8; Luke 24:12).
The tomb belonged to Joseph of Arimathea and had never been used before (Matthew 27:60).
The empty tomb contained several important details:
- The large stone (weighing several tons) had been rolled away.
- The Roman seal on the tomb had been broken.
- The body of Jesus was gone.
- The grave clothes (linen strips) were left lying there, with the head cloth folded separately (John 20:6-7).
- Angels were present, announcing the resurrection.
These details were important because they ruled out the possibility that the body had been stolen or moved by the disciples.
The empty tomb is crucial for several reasons:
- It confirms that Jesus truly died and was buried.
- It provides strong historical evidence for the resurrection (the tomb was known and could have been produced if the body was still there).
- It fulfills prophecy (Psalm 16:10; Isaiah 53:9-12).
- It is a key part of the gospel: “Christ died for our sins… he was buried… he was raised on the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
- It demonstrates God’s power over death and the beginning of new creation.
The empty tomb, combined with the appearances of the risen Jesus, convinced the early disciples that Jesus had risen from the dead.
- Matthew 28:1-10
- Mark 16:1-8
- Luke 24:1-12
- John 20:1-10
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-8
- Psalm 16:10
- Isaiah 53:9-12
The empty tomb is one of the strongest historical evidences for the resurrection of Jesus. The fact that the early church proclaimed the resurrection in Jerusalem — where the tomb was well known — is powerful testimony. No one was able to produce the body of Jesus to disprove the claim. The empty tomb invites every person to consider the reality of the risen Christ.
