Heaven is
the dwelling place of God
and the ultimate destination for those who belong to Him.
The Bible presents Heaven
as both a present reality
and a future hope.
Scripture describes Heaven in several important ways:
- God’s Dwelling Place — Heaven is where God’s throne is established and from where He rules over all creation.
- The Third Heaven — The Bible speaks of three “heavens.” The first is the sky/atmosphere, the second is outer space, and the third is the dwelling place of God (see 2 Corinthians 12:2).
- A Prepared Place for Believers — Jesus promised to prepare a place for His followers so that they may be with Him (John 14:1-3).
- The New Heaven and New Earth — In the future, God will create a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells and God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:1-4).
Heaven is portrayed as a place of perfect joy, peace, worship, and the complete absence of sin, sorrow, pain, and death.
- John 14:1-3 — Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
- 2 Corinthians 5:1 — For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
- Philippians 3:20 — For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Revelation 21:1-4 — Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband…
- Revelation 21:4 — And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.
Present Heaven — The current dwelling place of God and the temporary home of believers who have died. It is a real place of conscious existence and blessing.
Future Heaven (New Heaven and New Earth) — The eternal state described in Revelation 21–22. This will be a renewed physical creation where God dwells with His people forever. Many Bible students see this as the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan.
Paradise — A term sometimes used in Scripture to describe the blessed state of the righteous dead (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:4). It is often understood as referring to the present Heaven.
The Bible’s teaching about Heaven provides great comfort and hope for believers. It encourages us to:
- Live with an eternal perspective
- Look forward to being with the Lord
- Find strength during times of suffering and loss
- Focus on storing up treasure in Heaven rather than only on earth
Heaven is not earned by good works but is received as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ.
