Cosmic Powers are the world-rulers of this present darkness named in Ephesians 6.
Paul lists them with rulers, authorities, and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
The phrase is larger than a private demon and smaller than God.
They press on nations, ages, and the atmosphere of unbelief, and they are already under the feet of the seated Christ.
When Paul tells the church it does not wrestle against flesh and blood, he stacks four terms so that no one will shrink the war to a mood.
- Rulers.
- Authorities.
- Cosmic powers over this present darkness.
- Spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
The words translated cosmic powers point to world-rulers: beings whose reach is as wide as an age, a culture, a realm of night.
Cosmic here does not mean they made the cosmos. It means their ambition and their assigned rebellion are not local only.
- The same letter that names them seats Christ far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, in this age and in the one to come.
- The powers are real.
The end will abolish every rule and every authority and power.
- Cosmic powers name scale: this present darkness, not only one house or one habit.
- They are creatures. The cosmos belongs to the Son.
- Flesh and blood can serve them. Flesh and blood are not the enemy to hate.
- Present darkness has a clock. This age is not the age to come.
- Seated with Christ is the church’s position; standing in armor is her work.
- Maps of the powers must not become a second gospel.
- Every such power will be destroyed when the kingdom is delivered to the Father.
- World-Rulers – Influence over the order of this age.
- This Present Darkness – Their field is now, not eternity.
- Heavenly Places – The conflict is unseen before it is public.
- Linked Ranks – Named with rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces.
- Blinding Work – The god of this world keeps people from seeing the gospel’s light.
- Disarmed – Triumphed over at the cross.
- Doomed – Christ must reign until every enemy is under His feet.
- Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
- Ephesians 1:20-21 – God seated Christ “at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
- Ephesians 2:1-2 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.”
- Ephesians 3:10 – “…so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.”
- Colossians 1:16 – “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
- Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:24-25 – “Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.”
- Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers… nor powers… will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- Daniel 10:13, 20 – The prince of Persia withstood the messenger; the prince of Greece would come.
- John 12:31 – “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:4 – “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…”
- 1 John 5:19 – “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”
- Revelation 12:9 – “And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world…”
- Luke 4:5-7 – The devil showed Him the kingdoms of the world and claimed they had been delivered to him.
- Psalm 82:1, 8 – “God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment… Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!”
- Isaiah 24:21 – “On that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth.”
We wrestle against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.
They are world-rulers of an age that is passing. They are not the Maker of heaven and earth.
Do not hate flesh and blood. Do not fear the ranks as if Christ were not seated far above every name.
He disarmed the rulers and authorities. He must reign until every power is destroyed.
The church makes known the wisdom of God to the rulers in the heavenly places.
Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Stand. This darkness is present. It is not forever.
