The open door is the door Jesus sets before Philadelphia.
Behold, I have set before you an open door,
which no one is able to shut.
I know that you have but little power,
and yet you have kept my word
and have not denied my name.
I stand at the door and knock.
The letter to Philadelphia holds the open door. Jesus is the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David. He opens and no one will shut. He shuts and no one opens. Then He says He has set before them an open door, which no one is able to shut. They have little power. They kept His word and did not deny His name. The door is His. Little power does not close it.
- Paul uses the same picture for the gospel. A wide door for effective work has opened. Pray that God will open a door for the word. The picture is an entrance for the word, not a private feeling.
- Laodicea is the other door. He stands at the door and knocks. That door is not already open. Someone must hear His voice and open. Do not call the knock an open door.
- The lukewarm church is the one He warns. Philadelphia, with little power, is the one He sets the door before.
He opens. No one shuts it. They kept His word. Laodicea must still open the door He knocks on.
I have set before you an open door,
which no one is able to shut.
You have but little power,
and you have kept my word.
Laodicea’s door is the one He knocks on.
- The open door is set by Christ before Philadelphia.
- He has the key of David. What He opens, no one shuts.
- Little power does not cancel the door. They kept His word and His name.
- Paul’s open door is an entrance for the word.
- Laodicea is not given that door. He stands outside and knocks.
- Hearing His voice and opening is the Laodicean call.
- The Key – The key of David. He opens and shuts.
- The Door – Set before Philadelphia, and no one can shut it.
- The Church – Little power, a kept word, a name not denied.
- The Word – Paul’s door for the gospel.
- The Other Door – Laodicea, where He knocks.
- The Difference – One door is opened by Him. The other must be opened to Him.
- Revelation 3:7-8 – “The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”
- Revelation 3:20 – “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” This is Laodicea, not the open door.
- 1 Corinthians 16:9 – “For a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.”
- Colossians 4:3 – “Pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ.”
- Acts 14:27 – “They declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.”
Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.
I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
A wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
The open door is Philadelphia’s. He set it. No one shuts it. Laodicea is the door He knocks on. Do not trade them.
