Jesus’ letters to the seven churches are His words to real congregations in Asia,
spoken for every church that has an ear.
Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches,
to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.
He who has an ear,
let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
I am the first and the last,
and the living one.
Jesus is walking among the lampstands. John is on Patmos. The command is to write and send. Seven cities. Seven letters. One Speaker. Each letter names the church, names Christ in a way that fits the need, says what He knows, praises or warns, calls for repentance or endurance, and promises to the one who conquers. The Spirit is the one the churches are told to hear.
- Ephesus has works and truth, and has left the love it had at first.
- Smyrna is poor and slandered, and is about to suffer. No rebuke.
- Pergamum holds Christ’s name where Satan’s throne is, and holds false teaching too.
- Thyatira has growing works, and tolerates Jezebel.
- Sardis has a name of being alive, and is dead.
- Philadelphia has little power and has kept His word. No rebuke.
- Laodicea is lukewarm, rich, and blind, and Christ stands at the door.
The church in each city is a lampstand He can remove. The letters are not a code that skips the cities. They are also not a private mail that later churches may ignore. He who has an ear is the refrain. The Ephesians are one of the seven. The same Lord speaks to the rest.
Seven lampstands.
One who walks among them.
Hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
- The seven are real churches in Asia, named and ordered.
- Each letter reveals Christ before it corrects the church.
- Two churches get no rebuke: Smyrna and Philadelphia.
- The call to hear is to the churches, plural, not only to the city named.
- Conquering is the promise line. The reward matches the pressure.
- Repentance is still open where the lampstand can be removed.
- The study belongs with the text of Revelation 2 and 3, not instead of it.
- The Speaker – The one who walks among the lampstands.
- The Address – To the angel of the church in that city.
- The Knowledge – I know your works.
- The Wound – Left love, false teaching, dead name, or lukewarm wealth.
- The Ear – Hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
- The Conqueror – A promise to the one who overcomes.
- The Order – Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea.
- Revelation 1:11 – “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”
- Revelation 1:12-13 – “I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man.”
- Revelation 1:17-18 – “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
- Revelation 1:20 – “The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”
- Revelation 2:7 – “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
- Revelation 2 and Revelation 3 – The seven letters.
Write what you see and send it to the seven churches.
The seven lampstands are the seven churches.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
I am the first and the last, and the living one.
Read each letter with the city He named. Then hear it as a church that has an ear. He walks among the lampstands. He can remove one. He still speaks.
