The Church Age is
the present period in redemptive history
that began at Pentecost
and continues until the return of Christ.
It is also called
the Age of Grace
or
the Age of the Spirit.
During this time
God is forming the church
—
the body of Christ
—
composed of all who believe in Jesus,
both Jew and Gentile.
The Church Age is characterized by
the outpouring of the Holy Spirit,
the worldwide proclamation of the gospel,
and the building of the church.
The Church Age marks a distinct phase in God’s unfolding plan. After Christ’s finished work on the cross, His resurrection, and His ascension, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost, empowering the disciples and inaugurating the church. Throughout this age the gospel is preached to all nations, believers are baptized into the body of Christ, and the church grows through the Spirit’s work. Scripture presents this period as a time of grace in which God is gathering a people for His name from every tribe, language, and nation before the return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom in fullness.
- The Church Age began with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2).
- It was a mystery not fully revealed in the Old Testament — that Gentiles would be fellow heirs and members of the same body (Ephesians 3:4-6).

- Acts 2:1-4, 16-17 – The Spirit is poured out at Pentecost in fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy.
- Acts 1:8 – “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses… to the end of the earth.”
- Ephesians 3:4-6 – The mystery is that Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.
- Ephesians 1:13-14 – Believers are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance.

The Church Age is the present chapter in God’s redemptive story — the time between the first and second comings of Christ. In this age the Holy Spirit is powerfully at work, the gospel is going to the nations, and the Lord is building His church. Believers live by grace, walk in the Spirit, and look forward with hope to the return of the Lord. Understanding the Church Age helps us see our place in God’s plan and strengthens us to fulfill the mission Christ has given until He comes.
