Contend for the Faith is the urgent call of Jude to believers to defend and hold fast the apostolic gospel against false teachers and distortion.
The faith in view is “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” — the unchanging body of truth concerning Jesus Christ and salvation.
Contending is not quarrelsome argument for its own sake, but earnest, courageous, and loving defense of the truth that saves.

Jude had wanted to write a letter about the shared salvation believers enjoy, yet he found it necessary instead to appeal to his readers “to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” Certain ungodly people had crept in unnoticed, perverting the grace of God into sensuality and denying the only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. In response Jude calls the church to an active, strenuous defense of the truth. The word “contend” carries the idea of wrestling or striving with intensity. The faith itself is not something the church invents or revises; it has been delivered once for all. Contending therefore means preserving, proclaiming, and protecting that delivered gospel against both doctrinal error and the lifestyle that denies it. The same appeal echoes throughout the New Testament as the apostles urge believers to stand firm, guard the good deposit, and refuse any other gospel.

It requires clarity, courage, humility, and dependence on the Spirit. While we contend, we also build ourselves up in the most holy faith, pray in the Spirit, and keep ourselves in the love of God. The same God who gave the faith is able to keep His people from stumbling and to present them blameless with great joy. Therefore stand firm. Hold fast the pattern of sound words. Contend for the faith — and trust the One who is able to keep you.
