The River of Life is the biblical image of the life-giving presence and blessing of God that flows from His throne to heal, refresh, and sustain His people.
In the final vision of Revelation it flows crystal clear from the throne of God and of the Lamb, watering the tree of life and bringing healing to the nations.
Jesus Himself offered living water that becomes in the believer a spring welling up to eternal life.
The river pictures the unending, free, and abundant life that God gives through Christ and the Spirit — now tasted by faith and fully enjoyed in the age to come.
From the garden of Eden, where a river flowed to water the trees, to the prophet’s vision of a river flowing from the temple, Scripture uses the image of a life-giving river to speak of God’s presence and blessing. Ezekiel saw water issuing from the threshold of the temple, growing deeper as it went, bringing life wherever it flowed and turning the Dead Sea fresh. Zechariah spoke of living waters flowing out from Jerusalem. Jesus stood at the Feast of Booths and cried out that whoever believes in Him, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water — speaking of the Spirit who would be given. In the New Jerusalem John sees the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the street. On either side grows the tree of life, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. There is no longer any curse. The river is the final and full communication of the life of God to His redeemed people in a renewed creation.

The River of Life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It is pure, abundant, and free. Wherever it goes, life follows. Jesus has already given the living water of the Spirit to all who believe, a spring welling up to eternal life. In the age to come the same river will flow through the New Jerusalem, watering the tree of life and bringing healing to the nations. The curse will be gone. The thirsty are invited even now: Come. Take the water of life without price. Drink deeply of the One who is Himself the fountain of life. The river is already flowing. One day it will fill the whole renewed creation, and the people of God will drink forever from the river of His delights.
