¶ Rulers and Authorities
Rulers and Authorities are designations used in the New Testament for ranks of spiritual beings in the unseen realm, both the hostile powers of darkness and the broader created order of angelic powers.
Paul frequently pairs the terms when describing the spiritual forces that Christ has already defeated and over which He now reigns.
They form part of the hierarchy of invisible powers created through Christ and for Him, yet some are aligned against God and His people.
Believers are delivered from their dominion and seated with Christ far above every rule and authority.
In several of Paul’s letters the expressions “rulers” and “authorities” (sometimes translated “principalities and powers”) appear as technical language for spiritual beings who exercise power in the heavenly places. Some contexts emphasize the hostile forces that oppose the church and once held humanity in bondage. Other contexts include the full range of created spiritual powers that were made through the Son and remain subject to Him. The decisive turning point is the cross: Christ disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, triumphing over them. God raised Christ from the dead and seated Him far above every rule and authority and power and dominion. Those who are united to Christ share in that victory; they have been delivered from the domain of darkness and are no longer under the ultimate sway of these powers. The church still wrestles against them in the present age, yet it does so from a position of secured triumph and in the strength of the risen Lord.

Rulers and authorities in the heavenly places are real, yet they are not ultimate. They were created through Christ and for Him. The hostile powers among them have already been disarmed and put to open shame at the cross. The risen Lord is seated far above every rule and authority, and those who are in Him share that secure position. The church still wrestles against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, but it wrestles from victory, not toward it. Therefore put on the whole armor of God. Stand firm in the strength of the Lord. Nothing in the hierarchy of spiritual powers can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Their head is defeated; your Head is exalted over all. Live in the freedom and confidence that the triumph of Christ provides.
