Cosmic Signs are the lights of heaven answering the day of the Lord.
The sun is darkened,
the moon is turned to blood,
the stars fall, and
the powers of the heavens are shaken.
The prophets spoke of these signs.
Jesus placed them at the coming of the Son of Man.
They are not curiosities for chart-makers.
They are creation’s witness that the King is near.
From the fourth day of creation the sun, moon, and stars were given for signs and for seasons, for days and years.
When the Lord comes to judge, those same lights fail or change.
- Joel said the sun would be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and awesome day of the Lord.
- Isaiah said the stars would not give their light, and the sun would be dark at its rising.
- Jesus told His disciples that after the tribulation of those days the sun would be darkened, the moon would not give its light, the stars would fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens would be shaken—and then the sign of the Son of Man would appear.
- Peter, on Pentecost, said that Joel’s word had begun to be fulfilled in the outpouring of the Spirit, and that the cosmic portion still belonged to the coming day.
- Revelation sees the sun black as sackcloth, the moon like blood, and the stars falling as a fig tree drops its fruit.
The creation that declared God’s glory will also declare His arrival.
Heaven and earth are not spectators.
They are summoned as witnesses.
- The lights were made for signs; in the last days they become signs of judgment and of hope.
- Cosmic signs belong to the day of the Lord, not to every dark night in history.
- Jesus tied them to His coming on the clouds with power and great glory.
- Pentecost began Joel’s promise; the darkened sun and blood moon still await the great day.
- These signs call the church to lift up its head, because redemption is drawing near.
- They also warn the unrepentant that the Judge is at the door.
- The God who made the lights can darken them, and He will make a new heaven and a new earth.
- Sun Darkened – The greater light fails at the approach of the Lord.
- Moon to Blood – The lesser light is changed before the great and awesome day.
- Stars Falling – The host of heaven is shaken, as a fig tree drops unripe fruit.

The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
- Joel 3:15-16 – “The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake.”

- Matthew 24:29-31 – “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man… and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
- Mark 13:24-26 – “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.”
- Luke 21:11, 25-28 – “There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven… And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves… Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

- Revelation 6:12-14 – “When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up…”

- 2 Peter 3:10 – “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved…”
- Luke 23:44-45 – “It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed.”
- Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
Jesus said that after the tribulation of those days the powers of the heavens will be shaken, and then they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds.
These signs are not given so that the church may panic. They are given so that no one leads you astray, and so that you may lift up your head.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
The lights that were made for signs will do what they were made to do.
When the heavens shake, the word of Jesus will not pass away. Straighten up. Your redemption is drawing near.
