The Ascension is the bodily return of the risen Lord Jesus Christ to heaven forty days after His resurrection.
In the sight of the apostles He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight as He entered the presence of God to sit at the right hand of the Father.
The ascension marks the completion of His earthly work, the beginning of His heavenly session, and the guarantee of His return.
From heaven He pours out the Spirit, intercedes for His people, and reigns until all enemies are put under His feet.
After the resurrection Jesus appeared to His disciples over a period of forty days, speaking about the kingdom of God and giving them final commands. Then, on the Mount of Olives, while they watched, He was taken up into heaven. Two angels announced that this same Jesus would return in the same way. The ascension is not a disappearance but an exaltation. The Son who had come down from heaven now returns to the Father, bearing the scars of the cross and the glory of the resurrection. He enters heaven as the victorious High Priest, the enthroned King, and the forerunner of His people. From that moment the church lives under the reign of the ascended Christ, receives the promised Spirit, and waits for the day when He will come again in glory. The ascension assures believers that their risen Lord is alive forever, ruling over all things, and will one day receive them to Himself.

The ascension means that the work of atonement is finished, the King is enthroned, and the church’s future is secure. The same Jesus will come again in the same way He went. Until that day the church lives under the reign of the ascended Lord, receives His gifts, and sets its hope fully on the grace that will be brought at His return. Look up. The Lord is ascended. The Lord is enthroned. The Lord is coming again.
